Battle For Texas the Experience-San Antonio

August 9, 2017 By Callie Leave a Comment

San Antonio,Tx

This post is sponsored on behalf of Battle For Texas the Experience-all Texan statements, big hair, and ya’ll’s are completely my own.

This past week we did a little road tripping and made our way from Houston to San Antonio to fill ourselves with Texas pride. I was excited to check out the Battle For Texas The Experience museum since-shocking-I have never been!

Battle for Texas boasts OVER 250 ARTIFACTS TOGETHER FOR THE FIRST TIME.
Bowie, Travis, Crockett, Sequin and Santa Anna. They’re all represented in this incredible collection of many never-before-seen artifacts. This unforgettable, curated exhibition provides views with an in-depth perspective on the stirring story of the Battle of the Alamo. You’ll come away inspired by the historic battle and beaming with Texas pride .

Battle For Texas is actually located in the Rivercenter shopping area and is literally across the way from The Alamo. We opted to upgrade and take the immersive tour which allowed us to get a portable device and headphones that told stories and facts about each item we saw and events as they happened. This experience was complete with immersive reenactments on the device-pretty cool!

Now we went in the dead of summer so I must admit this was a nice little air conditioned break! Oh and check this out (I’m a history geek) when Santa Anna raised the red flag symbolizing that they would be taking no prisoners-death to all….do you know what Travis did? Shot this cannon ball at him! THIS IS THAT CANNON BALL-SO COOL!

They also had all of Santa Anna’s belongings once they took after the defeat-Remember the Alamo!

Check out Sam Houston’s boots!

Oh and the oldest Texas flag-known-hand made and awesome. See because Texas was it’s own country! The stars at night are big and bright….This museum was so much fun. The kiddos got paper coon skin hats to wear and we loved seeing all the artifacts. There was also a section which made you feel like you were actually in The Alamo during the siege-hits home. If you’re planning a trip to San Antonio add this one to your list!

The Houston Fire Museum

July 22, 2017 By Callie Leave a Comment

Houston,TX

We love a great adventure and have been meaning to look some around our own neck of the woods. One of our friends posted on social media about visiting the local Fire Museum which got me thinking…..We spend so much time looking for adventures in other place why not look close by!

The Houston Fire Museum is located in downtown Houston and has parking available during the weekdays from 10-4 right in front of the converted Station 7.

The museum is small and lovely and they have truly tried to preserve the building and history which of course this history geek loves. Fees are $5 for adults and $2 for kiddos. We started off by seeing antique fire engines.

We were able to go upstairs and see the sleeping area, original slide pole, bathroom and shower area-which was actually really cool!

The dispatchers room.

They even had an amazing little kids area where you can dress up like a firefighter, drive a fire engine and push all the buttons, slide down the pole, and connect hoses.

We especially loved seeing all the fire stations in Houston-some of which were just simply converted houses when they opened. Oh and we got to see my Great Grandfather’s station 9-he was the fire chief!

The Houston Fire Museum is a quick and inexpensive lovely place! Take a day and go an visit and have lunch downtown!

Titanic Museum

Pigeon Forge, TN

Our family trip to Tennessee took us to Nashville,Chattanooga and Pigeon Forge. If you have never been to Pigeon Forge like me then you will be quite overwhelmed with the amount of things there are to do. Pigeon Forge has tons of water parks, mini golf and go carts but I was looking for something different and unique and then walked in the Titanic Museum.

The Titanic Museum literally looks like the actual Titanic with an iceberg hitting the back of the ship and a water feature in front. As we walked up they were playing “My heart will go on”-I couldn’t believe it. Once you enter you receive a passenger name for each guest and follow them along your tour. Children also receive a more child friendly version. You are also asked if you want an audio necklace to take with you throughout the tour to hear interesting stories along the way.

Unfortunately you are not aloud to take pictures inside due to copyright-I was pretty bummed about that because I am a family memory junkie.

The museum is really interesting and for a history geek like me I loved it. Our little was also engaged throughout the museum with interactive things for her to do. They also had period people dressed up and available throughout the museum. I will say that as we walked through the third class area they had a display of a stairwell which flicked and filled with water and it pretty much freaked me out.

The museum was created by the second person to dive for Titanic. Tons of artifacts. There was also a captains wheel you could spin and then you could walk out onto the deck and feel an actual “iceberg” on the side and you could dip your fingers into frigid water-the same degree it was when the ship went down-yikes.

The most amazing part was the exact replica of the grand staircase which we all walked up. They took pictures for sale of your family on the stairwell as well.

The end of the museum had a fun interactive part which was great for kids. The Titanic Museum was definitely a fun attraction for the whole family!
